Who will lead Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2024? The question is becoming pertinent because Pakistan Cricket Board’s Chairman Mohsin Naqvi refused to confirm Shaheen Afridi as Pakistan’s T20 captain. During the selection committee’s launch, Naqvi stated that the newly appointed selectors will choose the Pakistan captain.
Afridi was only named the T20I team’s captain in November. During the one series he led in, which consisted of five games in New Zealand, Pakistan lost 4-1. Even though he had just finished winning a title with his PSL team, Lahore Qalandars, he was under intense scrutiny right away for his tactical abilities as captain. But the outcome against New Zealand was followed by a disastrous PSL season for Qalandars, who finished bottom of the table with just one win out of ten games.
However, his role in the Pakistan team going forward is in doubt, as Mohsin Naqvi refused to rule any possibility out when asked about it.
“Even I don’t know who the captain will be. Whether Shaheen continues or a new captain comes in will be determined after the fitness camp [starting on Monday]. There are a number of technical factors we will consider, the details of which I do not want to go into. We want a long-term solution, whether it’s Shaheen or a new man. And then we intend to stick by that man, instead of just changing a captain just because you lose a match or captain,” Naqvi said.
