IPL 2024 Format explained: CSK, RCB in same group, Dhoni vs Kohli again?

IPL 2024 Format explained: CSK, RCB in same group, Dhoni vs Kohli again?

The 10 teams have been divided into two groups of five and will play the same number of matches as last year. The playoff system will also remain the same.

What is IPL 2024 format? Confusion has prevailed with BCCI yet to disclose anything in regards to the format. But considering how it panned out last season, it’s simple, there won’t be any Dhoni vs Kohli this season anymore. The reason? Again, the format. In the current format, 10 teams are divided into two groups of A & B. But they end up playing 14 matches anyway. So, will there be another Virat Kohli vs MS Dhoni encounter in the 17th edition of the IPL? Let’s check out.

IPL 2024 Groups: Format Explainer

The ten franchises have been slotted into two different groups. Group A features the Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants. Meanwhile, Group B has the Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and Gujarat Titans.

According to the IPL 2023 format, each team in a group will only face off once. And they will take on the five teams from other group twice. That makes up the number of matches to 14.

So, as MI and KKR are in Group A, they will only face each other once as per the format of IPL 2023. Unless BCCI indicates any change, it will remain so.

Kohli vs Dhoni twice?

Nope. Since, CSK and RCB are in Group B, they will only face off once. With Chennai Super Kings thrashing Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the opening encounter, RCB won’t have the chance to avenge their loss at home in the league stage.

MS Dhoni vs Virat Kohli clash could only happen in IPL 2024 playoffs.

After the conclusion of the Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians match on March 24, the two sides will go against each other once again when BCCI announces the remaining schedule adjusting dates as per Lok Sabha Elections. Since Hardik Pandya left his ‘new’ franchise, GT, and moved back to his ‘old’ team, MI, it has emerged as the new rivalry.
