Sunil Gavaskar lauds MS Dhoni’s replacement – Ruturaj Gaikwad, calls bowling changes ‘Most Impressive’

Gavaskar commended Gaikwad's astute use of his bowling attack, particularly pacer Mustafizur Rahman.

Sunil Gavaskar, former Indian cricket captain, heaped praise on Chennai Super Kings‘ (CSK) new skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad following their convincing win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2024 opener.

Speaking on Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar highlighted Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy as the most impressive aspect of CSK’s victory. “It’s crucial to win your first match as captain, and that’s exactly what Ruturaj achieved,” he said. “But what truly stood out was his bowling changes.”

Masterful Use of Bowling Resources by Ruturaj Gaikwad

Gavaskar commended Gaikwad’s astute use of his bowling attack, particularly pacer Mustafizur Rahman. “He kept rotating Mustafizur brilliantly,” Gavaskar explained, “and showed faith in Tushar Deshpande for the final over. Even though Deshpande had been expensive earlier, Gaikwad stuck with him, and Deshpande delivered a fantastic final over.”

MS Dhoni’s Presence: A Guiding Light

Gavaskar acknowledged the invaluable presence of MS Dhoni, the former CSK captain, who is now serving as a mentor for the team. “Having Dhoni around to guide and encourage Gaikwad makes a huge difference,” he said. “Sometimes, a simple nod of approval from someone as experienced as Dhoni can be a major confidence booster.”

Experts Analyze RCB’s Shortcomings

The discussion on CRICKET LIVE also included insights from other cricketing legends on RCB’s performance. Sunil Gavaskar, Kevin Pietersen, and Steve Smith offered their perspectives on RCB’s strategy.

Sunil Gavaskar: One-Dimensional Tactics Hurt RCB

Sunil Gavaskar pointed out RCB’s over-reliance on short bowling as a critical flaw. “It looked like their entire bowling strategy revolved around bouncers,” he observed. “However, their execution was poor, leading to numerous wides and extra deliveries for CSK batsmen.”

Kevin Pietersen: Chasing Was the Better Option

Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen believed RCB made a mistake in choosing to field first. “Looking at that excellent batting pitch,” he said, “I would have definitely opted to chase. Statistics don’t always paint the whole picture. You have to adapt to the situation in front of you, and this pitch clearly favored batsmen.”

Steve Smith: CSK Capitalized on Home Advantage

Steve Smith, the Australian batting legend, emphasized CSK’s familiarity with the Chepauk pitch as a key factor in their victory. “RCB simply haven’t had success at Chepauk,” he stated. “CSK, on the other hand, played to their strengths. Their bowlers squeezed the RCB batsmen in the middle overs, and Mustafizur was exceptional with his wicket-taking abilities. The fact that everyone in the CSK batting order contributed with decent starts made the chase comfortable. Overall, this is a dream start for Chennai.”
