MS Dhoni stuns all, quits captaincy a day before IPL 2024 opener, Gaikwad takes over

IPL 2024: For a long time, CSK's Ruturaj Gaikwad was looked at, as the successor to MS Dhoni, who has led the side since 2008.

In a major development on Thursday, at the IPL Captains Day in Chennai, something unusual happened. The Chennai Super Kings was represented by young and dynamic opener Ruturaj Gaikwad. This means that legendary MS Dhoni won’t lead the franchise this year, and Gaikwad will be their captain from here on, for the upcoming seasons as well.

The tweet was captioned, “Presenting the 9 captains with PBKS being represented by vice-captain Jitesh Sharma.”

Ruturaj, meanwhile was always touted as a captaincy material and had in fact led the Indian team to an Asian Games gold in 2023. In fact, for the last few weeks, there were hints that Dhoni might not lead after all. The 27-year-old has been exceptional in the IPL so far, having played 52 matches for the CSK till now and has scored 1797 runs at an average of 39. That includes a ton as well as 14 fifties.

Is it MS Dhoni’s Last Season?

The story does not end at Gaikwad being named the captain for sure. With reports of Dhoni’s knees not supporting him anymore, there could be another shock waiting for everyone. For all you know, Dhoni might just be playing his last season for the CSK.
