IPL 2024 Rule Changes: List of all rules changed in Indian Premier League

With these rule changes and the Smart Replay System in place, the IPL 2024 promises a season filled with exciting cricket, fairer play, and more accurate decision-making.

The upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season is set to be a thrilling spectacle, not just for the on-field action but also for the implementation of new rules and a cutting-edge decision-making system. Let’s delve into the key changes fans can expect this year.

New playing conditions: IPL 2024 Rule Changes

  • Two Bouncers Per Over:

Bowlers will have more freedom, with the BCCI adopting the two-bouncer-per-over rule currently used in domestic Indian cricket. This strategic advantage for bowlers aims to create a more balanced contest between bat and ball.

  • Maintaining Catch Check During Stumping Reviews:

The BCCI will continue its practice of checking for a catch during a referral for a stumping call. This differs from international regulations but ensures fairness for the fielding side.

No Change to these Existing Rules in IPL 2024

  • Two Reviews Per Team:

Teams will retain the two-review system with the ability to review wides and no balls.

  • No Stop Clock Rule:

Unlike recent ICC changes in international games, the IPL will not adopt a stop clock for reviews.

Smart Replay System

The IPL 2024 season also introduces the innovative Smart Replay System, designed to improve the speed and accuracy of on-field reviews. Here’s how it works:

  • Dedicated Team and Technology for TV Umpire:

Two Hawk-Eye operators analyze visuals captured by strategically placed high-speed cameras, providing real-time assistance to the TV umpire.

  • Enhanced Visuals for Better Decisions:

The system offers split-screen views for complex situations like close catches near the boundary and improved visuals for stumping calls. Additionally, high frame-rate cameras provide more precise evidence.

  • Clearer View of Close Catches:

A single frame with both front-on and side-on angles allows the umpire to zoom in and make conclusive decisions on catches hovering just above the ground.

  • Transparency and Speed:

Live broadcasts of conversations between the TV umpire and Hawk-Eye operators might be introduced, along with prioritizing relevant information like ball-tracking analysis in LBW reviews, to save time and increase transparency.

Trialing Innovation:

Following successful trials in the Hundred tournament, the BCCI has trained umpires on the Smart Replay System. This innovative technology will be used throughout IPL 2024 by a select group of Indian and overseas umpires.

With these rule changes and the Smart Replay System in place, the IPL 2024 promises a season filled with exciting cricket, fairer play, and more accurate decision-making.
