Just a week before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024), Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins has announced a new venture off the field – a multi-book deal with HarperCollins.

Pat Cummins, known for his express pace bowling and leadership qualities on the cricket pitch, is set to release a range of books aimed at readers of all ages. This includes an illustrated children’s series, a heart-warming picture book based on his own family, and a non-fiction book focusing on leadership and decision-making.

Howzat Pat Cummins

The first of Cummins’ offerings is an illustrated children’s series titled “Howzat Pat.” Scheduled for release in October, the series targets children aged eight and above.

Co-written with award-winning author Dave Hartley and illustrated by Serena Geddes, “Howzat Pat” follows the adventures of three friends as they navigate themes of friendship, teamwork, leadership, environmental responsibility, and of course, cricket.

Sharing love of reading with his family

Cummins’ second book is a picture book for younger children, aged three and above. This heartwarming story is inspired by his own family life and is expected to be released next year.

Speaking about the inspiration behind his children’s books, Cummins credits his parents who instilled in him a love for reading and learning.

“Life was busy with school, sport and family,” Cummins said. “But both my Mum and Dad always encouraged us to read, whether it was novels on family holidays or just for fun.”

From Cricket Captain to Author

Pat Cummins’ final book in the deal is a non-fiction title currently under development. This book, co-written with award-winning writer Ben Mckelvey, will delve into the world of contemporary leadership and decision-making.

Expected to be released in time for Christmas, the book will draw on Cummins’ own experiences as captain of the Australian cricket team, alongside insights from other respected figures.

“Throughout my career, I’ve faced challenges that required tough decisions,” Pat Cummins said. “This book is about exploring those moments and the lessons learned along the way.”

Pat Cummins made history in the IPL auction for the 2024 season by becoming the first player to secure a bid of INR 20 crore (USD 2.4 million approximately).
