The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing criticism for its financial priorities. While struggling to pay its players and maintain stadiums, the PCB has reportedly offered a hefty salary of $2 million – INR 16 Crore (approx. PKR 4.6 crore per month) to lure former Australian cricketer Shane Watson as their new coach.

This proposed salary would make Shane Watson the highest-paid coach in Pakistan’s cricketing history. The PCB is also said to be agreeable to his other demands, including a limited coaching role focused on white-ball cricket.
This news comes amidst reports of the PCB neglecting domestic players’ salaries and failing to maintain cricketing infrastructure. Legendary pacer Wasim Akram recently criticized the board for the poor state of stadiums in northern Pakistan.

In October 2023, during the World Cup, former Pakistan Cricket Team captain Rashid Latif alleged that players hadn’t been paid for five months. This raises questions about the PCB’s financial priorities.
Fans Divided, Decision Pending
Shane Watson is reportedly considering the offer but has expressed his inability to be present year-round. With both PCB CEO Salman Naseer and Chairman Mohsin Naqvi currently attending ICC meetings in Dubai, a final decision awaits their return.

Shaheen Afridi captaincy on hold
The PCB is also contemplating removing Shaheen Afridi from his T20I captaincy role. Watson’s input, if he accepts the offer, will likely hold significant weight in this decision.
The upcoming T20 series against New Zealand in April could be Watson’s first assignment, with the World Cup being the real test. The PCB will need to carefully navigate these financial waters and make decisions that benefit both the team and its players.
