The IPL 2024 has not even started, the players haven’t started to impress in the T20s, but Virat Kohli‘s place in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup might be in danger. As per a report in The Telegraph, the team management and the selectors could make some tough calls for the marquee event, in the West Indies and the USA.
Although, as per the report, his axing is not a certainty, but only a solid IPL could change the selectors’ mind. Earlier, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead the side in the World Cup. In the end, it will be Ajit Agarkar’s call, whether Kohli makes the cut or not.
A source said, it “remains a very delicate matter and not many are willing to get involved.”
On the other hand, Team India has a large pool of batters in Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube, along with Hardik Pandya, who can take over, when needed. It is also learnt that Agarkar seems to have spoken with Kohli, regarding his approach in T20s.
Wickets in WI & USA Won’t Suit Kohli
The report further says that the slow wickets in WI & the USA might not suit Kohli. The players seem to have been shortlisted, with ambiguity on wicket-keeper’s role. It looks like, will be a battle between KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel, and with the former fit, he will take the spot for sure. All these uncertainties will continue till the time the provisional squad is sent to the ICC, in May.
