Dev's success stands in stark contrast to the performance of his fellow Indian boxers. He is the sole remaining competitor out of the initial nine who participated in the tournament.

Indian boxer Nishant Dev stands on the precipice of a historic achievement, just one victory away from securing a coveted Paris 2024 Olympic quota in the men’s 71kg weight category.

Nishant Dev secures Pre-Quarterfinal Win

Nishant Dev journey to Olympic qualification took a significant step forward on Sunday with a dominant performance against Christos Karaitis of Greece. The 23-year-old Indian boxer left no room for doubt, securing a unanimous 5:0 decision victory in the pre-quarterfinals.

“I am very happy,” Dev expressed his joy to Olympics.com after the fight. “I was well prepared and confident. Hopefully, this win paves the way for my participation in the Paris Olympics.”

Teamwork fuel Nishant Dev Paris Olympics dream

Nishant Dev emphasized the importance of teamwork in his preparation for the tournament. “The entire team has been instrumental in getting me to this point,” he acknowledged. “There’s just one more hurdle to clear for Olympic qualification, and I’m fully focused on delivering my best performance in the next fight.”

Nishant Dev now sets his sights on the quarter-finals, where he will face a formidable opponent in Omari Jones of the USA. Jones, a world championship silver medalist, presents a significant challenge, but a win against him will guarantee India an Olympic boxing quota in the men’s 71kg category.

Nishant Dev shines as lone hope for India

Dev’s success stands in stark contrast to the performance of his fellow Indian boxers. He is the sole remaining competitor out of the initial nine who participated in the tournament. Renowned boxers like Shiva Thapa and Mohammad Hussamuddin were unfortunately eliminated in their opening rounds.

Road to Paris Olympics: Qualification Process and India’s Standing

This first World Boxing Qualification Tournament, featuring nearly 600 boxers, offers a total of 49 quotas for the upcoming Olympics, 28 for men and 21 for women. A second World Qualification Tournament, scheduled for May in Bangkok, will award additional quotas.

India has already secured four Olympic boxing quotas for the Paris Olympics Games, all through impressive performances by female boxers at last year’s Asian Games. Nishant Dev’s potential victory would mark the first men’s boxing quota secured by India for the 2024 Olympics.

With his sights set firmly on the prize, Nishant Dev carries the hopes of the nation as he steps into the ring for his crucial quarter-final bout. A win will not only be a personal triumph but will also be a significant step forward for Indian boxing on the international stage.
