After Watson, more names thrown in to coach Pakistani team as PCB hell bent on foreign staff

The PCB has turned to PSL to end their search for a foreign coach, with the names of Watson, Phil Simmons & Mike Hesson doing the rounds.

Who will take up the role of Pakistan cricket team’s coach? Ever since Mickey Arthur and his support staff left, there have been various names doing the rounds, with no clarity emerging as of now. And with the T20 World Cup 2024, just a couple of months away, the time might just be running out for the board.

PSL 2024

PCB Still Unsure

A few days back, a report suggested that ex-Australia all-rounder Shane Watson was in talks with the PCB for the Pakistani team’s coach’s role, but now two more names have come up. All these coaches are related to the PSL as well. Now as per a source in the PCB, the names of New Zealand’s Mike Hesson (Islamabad United) and West Indian Phil Simmons (Karachi), are being considered.

“Initial talks have been held but it is too early to say if either of them is interested since at least two of them have prior assignments in other leagues as well,” the source said, as per a report in PTI.

Pakistan Team in the Lurch

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi has also made it clear that the board would opt for a foreign coaching staff for the T20 World Cup, and the Champions Trophy 2025. But the only problem that comes PCB’s way is their poor track record while dealing with the foreign coaches.

“Yes it is a problem specially after the way Zaka Ashraf (former Chairman) forced Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn and the other foreign coaches to go after the World Cup,” the source said. “The way Misbah ul Haq, Waqar Younis, Muhammad Hafeez were removed are examples.”
