Naseem Shah blames “Fear Culture” in Pakistan Cricket Team for reluctance to seek rest

Shah's concerns resonate with the recent incident involving fellow pacer Haris Rauf, whose contract was scrapped by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after he cited fitness and workload concerns for pulling out of the Australia tour.

Pakistan’s young pace sensation, Naseem Shah, has made a concerning revelation about the team’s cricketing culture, highlighting a fear among players to ask for rest due to concerns over their place in the team.

Returning from Injury, Naseem Shah Raises Concerns

Naseem Shah, currently playing for the Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), is making his comeback after a five-month injury layoff. The speedster, who underwent shoulder surgery in October 2023, expressed his worries about the environment surrounding player well-being.

Fear of losing place hinders Rest and Recovery

In a candid interview with CricWick, Shah stated, “The situation is such that if a newcomer performs well, the main bowlers fear losing their spot and hesitate to ask for rest. This fear discourages players from taking necessary breaks, potentially jeopardizing their careers in the long run.”

Cultural Pressure in Pakistan Cricket Team

He further elaborated on the cultural pressure that discourages players from prioritizing their physical well-being. “There’s also a fear that if we admit to fatigue or less-than-optimal fitness, we’ll face criticism and doubts about our commitment. Even fellow players can contribute to this pressure, making it difficult to voluntarily take rest.”

Naseem Shah proposes pre-planned workload management

In light of these concerns, Shah suggests a proactive approach: “The way to avoid this could be if the physio or bowling coach pre-determines the number of games each player participates in a series. This would be a much better approach.” He emphasized the need for implementing a proper workload management system, currently lacking within the “culture.”

Recent Example: Haris Rauf Contract Termination

Shah’s concerns resonate with the recent incident involving fellow pacer Haris Rauf, whose contract was scrapped by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after he cited fitness and workload concerns for pulling out of the Australia tour.

Naseem Shah opens up about injury

The interview also shed light on Naseem Shah injury journey. He revealed that he initially underestimated the severity of his shoulder pain, playing through discomfort until a tear occurred during the Asia Cup. He underwent surgery to repair the significant tear and is currently focused on his rehabilitation and comeback.

Naseem Shah candid insights raise crucial questions about player well-being and the need for a culture shift within Pakistan cricket. His call for a more proactive approach to workload management and a culture that encourages open communication about player needs is a crucial step towards ensuring the long-term health and success of Pakistani cricketers.
