Epic Games’ dream of a European third-party app store for iPhones is on hold. Apple terminated Epic’s developer account, citing a history of broken trust and Epic’s CEO’s criticisms. It looks like Apple vs Epic Games is happening again. Check out the full details below:
Apple vs Epic Games Again?
This comes after a lengthy legal battle between the two companies over Apple’s app store practices. While Epic won a small victory, the courts mostly sided with Apple. Epic then turned to Europe, hoping to leverage the new Digital Markets Act (DMA) that promotes fairer competition.
Epic Games reveals it in latest blog post – “We recently announced that Apple approved our Epic Games Sweden AB developer account. We intended to use that account to bring the Epic Games Store and Fortnite to iOS devices in Europe thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). To our surprise, Apple has terminated that account and now we cannot develop the Epic Games Store for iOS. This is a serious violation of the DMA and shows Apple has no intention of allowing true competition on iOS devices.”
The DMA takes effect on March 7th, 2024, and requires stricter rules for tech giants like Apple. Epic planned to launch its app store under these new regulations.
Apple, however, isn’t convinced Epic would play by the rules. They point to Epic CEO Tim Sweeney’s public criticism as evidence of potential future violations. Despite written assurances from Epic, Apple shut down their developer account.

This move forces Epic to revise its strategy. Launching their own app store seems unlikely, but partnering with another existing third-party store could be an option. Ultimately, Epic’s goal of bringing Fortnite back to iPhones remains unfulfilled. You can read the full blog post by Epic Games here.
