Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 was the first season when the ‘Impact Player’ rule was introduced. The rule allows one substitute player per team to play an active part in matches with bat or ball.
An impact player is very different from the standard substitution rule, which permits a replacement fielder to take the field in place of an injured player but prevents them from bowling or batting throughout the match.
On the other hand, Impact players can bat or bowl, so, the team can introduce a new players in the second or first innings to use them effectively.
Who are Impact Players in IPL?
Before the start of the play, captains of the two teams can name five substitutes to replace one of the players.
If a bowling side brings on player after the fall of a wicket or in the event of a batter retiring in the middle of an over, the incoming substitute cannot bowl the remaining balls of that over.
Regardless of the number of overs the player he is replacing has bowled before to being replaced, the Impact Player is still eligible to bowl his entire allotted four overs.
