National competitions like the ISL have attracted foreign investment in Indian football, allowing franchises to recruit both emerging talents from India and renowned legends of the game. Now, a new ambitious project aims to replicate this success at the state level.
Super League Kerala is poised to become the primary football league in Kerala, providing a pathway for players to advance to the ISL. The project, led by the Meeran Group, has enlisted Indian legend IM Vijayan as its brand ambassador and partnered with the Andres Iniesta Academy to enhance its profile and scouting network.
The league has lofty aspirations, with reports indicating the participation of global superstars such as Kaka, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cafu, and Hulk in its inaugural season. Scheduled to commence in August 2024, the first season will feature six teams, each allowed six foreign players.
According to Super League Kerala’s CEO Mathew Joseph, preparations are underway for the star-studded tournament, with international stars set to grace the event. The participating franchises, including two from Malappuram, will be announced soon.
Matches will be held at premier venues like Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, Municipal Stadium in Kozhikode, and Pahanane Stadium in Malappuram, with coverage provided by Star Sports and Disney Hotstar. Each team will adhere to AIFF norms, fielding six foreign players.
