Cristiano Ronaldo, the star forward for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, has been suspended for one match. Ronaldo has also received a fine for his obscene gesture following their 3-2 win over Al Shabab on Sunday.
Cristiano Ronaldo controversial gesture
Social media footage captured Cristiano Ronaldo cupping his ear and making a hand gesture near his pelvic area directed towards Al Shabab fans.
The gesture, interpreted as offensive, was seemingly prompted by chants of “Messi” heard in the background, a reference to Ronaldo’s long-standing football rival, Lionel Messi.
Disciplinary Action Taken:
Following an investigation, the Saudi Football Federation’s Disciplinary and Ethics Committee announced the official punishment on Wednesday:
- One-match suspension: Ronaldo will miss Al Nassr’s next league match.
- Financial penalties: Cristiano Ronaldo must pay 10,000 Saudi riyals ($2,666) to the Saudi Football Federation. He will also pay 20,000 riyals to Al-Shabab to cover complaint filing expenses
No Room for Appeal:
The committee emphasized that the decision is final and cannot be appealed.
This is not the first time Cristiano Ronaldo has been involved in such an incident. In April 2023, while still playing in England, he was seen making a similar gesture after a loss.
Impact on Al Nassr:
Ronaldo’s absence due to the suspension will be a setback for Al Nassr, as he is a key player for the team. The club will have to adjust their strategy for their upcoming match without their star forward.
