Best choice: Rohit Sharma gets Sourav Ganguly’s blessing to lead in T20 World Cup

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma would be India captain and not Hardik Pandya in T20 World Cup 2024.

Sourva Ganguly has given his blessings to Rohit Sharma to lead in T20 World Cup 2024. The former BCCI president played an important role in handing over India T20 captaincy to Rohit after Virat Kohli stepped down. And as BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed Rohit Sharma will lead India, Ganguly believes he is still the “best choice” despite Hardik Pandya leading in most T20Is since 2022.

“Rohit Sharma is the right choice as India captain for the T20 World Cup. The way he led the Indian team and won 10 matches in the 50-over World Cup is still fresh in our memory. So, Rohit was the best choice,” Mid-Day quoted Sourav Ganguly.

Speculations were rife after India’s semifinal exit in T20 World Cup 2022. That Rohit Sharma has only won the Asia Cup ODI title and missed out on three ICC trophies. With age not on his side, there were speculations whether Rohit Sharma should pass on the reign to Hardik Pandya.

However, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah put that to the bed. he confirmed Rohit will lead India in T20 World Cup 2024.

“We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts thereby winning 10 matches in a row. I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados,” Jay Shah said at a function in Rajkot to rename the stadium after former BCCI chief Niranjan Shah.
