Indian cricket sensation Shubman Gill has traded his bat for a ballot box, appointed as the “state icon” for upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Punjab.

The Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C announced Gill’s role on Monday, aiming to leverage the young star’s popularity to encourage voter participation. With the target of a 70% turnout (coined as “Is Vaar 70 Paar”), Shubman Gill is tasked with leading voter awareness campaigns across the state.

Why Shubman Gill for Punjab?

Shubman Gill, a Punjab native, enjoys immense popularity among sports enthusiasts, especially the youth. This makes him a strategic choice to connect with this crucial demographic and motivate them to vote. The CEO hopes Shubman Gill’s influence will inspire first-time voters to exercise their franchise.

Spreading the message:

Gill’s campaign efforts will focus on areas with historically low voter turnout. He will participate in awareness campaigns and make personal appeals to encourage participation in the democratic process.

Popular Punjabi singer Tarsem Jassar also joins the initiative as another “state icon.”

Beyond the Cricket Pitch:

This isn’t Shubman Gill first foray outside cricket. He lent his voice to the Hindi version of the movie “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” showcasing his interest in using his platform for positive impact.
