Just when you thought that after the end of day two, Team India had their back against the wall, with England riding on Ben Duckett’s ton, and R Ashwin ruled out due to family emergency, the depleted bowling unit stepped up and how. After the visitors resumed their innings at 207/2, they were bundled out for only 319 on the third day.
Post that, it was the turn of the Indian batters to pile on the misery, with Yashasvi Jaiswal & Shubman Gill leading the charge. The southpaw, who had already scored a double ton in the series, brought up his third century in Tests, with Gill also making the most of a flat batting deck. Both were unbeaten on 104 and 65, respectively.
England bowlers had no chance against Jaiswal and Gill duo, who added over 150 runs together, after skipper Rohit Sharma was out cheaply, on the bowling of Joe Root, while attempting a sweep. India, who already had an upper hand, with a lead of 126, were in a comfortable position, which was further elevated by Jaiwsal and Gill’s efforts, who scored at over 4/rpo.
On a hot day, the English bowlers were made to toil hard, as all of them went for runs without any rewards. Rehan Ahmed gave away 25 in five overs, while Mark Wood leaked 38 in eight. Surprisingly, veteran James Anderson looked ineffective as well, and didn’t pick up a wicket. That summed up a torrid day for the visiting side.
Indian Bowlers Lead the Way
But credit must be given to Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav, with the way they bowled. The fast bowler picked up pace and bagged four wickets, while the chinaman bowler, was not readable to the Indian keeper Dhruv Jurel, let alone the opposition batsmen. The duo shared six wickets in all, to hand the team, the advantage.
Perhaps the highlight of the day was when Jasprit Bumrah got rid of Root. Trying to disrupt the proceedings, the batsman went in for a reverse sweep, that went straight into the hands of Jaiswal, who made the catch look easy. From there on England only sunk deeper into trouble, with each passing ball.
