Ishan Kishan, the explosive wicketkeeper-batter, has sparked debate by skipping the final round of the Ranji Trophy matches despite being a centrally contracted player. This decision comes after the BCCI mandated mandatory Ranji appearances for key players.
While the BCCI emphasizes red-ball readiness, Ishan Kishan opted to forgo the Ranji Trophy. Ishan as per PTI, reportedly told ‘a senior member of the Indian team think-tank’ that he was “working on certain technical aspects” of his game. He feels ‘unprepared for red-ball cricket’ despite being advised by an Indian team official to play Ranji Trophy for a potential Test comeback.
Alternative route chosen by Ishan Kishan
Instead of Ranji Trophy, Ishan Kishan will participate in the DY Patil T20 tournament, which primarily features office teams and attracts players seeking pre-IPL tune-ups. This choice further fuels questions about his commitment to red-ball cricket.
BCCI stance:
Following Kishan’s past Ranji absences, the BCCI implemented a rule requiring a minimum number of Ranji games for IPL auction eligibility. BCCI secretary Jay Shah emphasized that fitness and BCCI, not players, decide a player’s future and red-ball proficiency requires Ranji participation.
Another centrally contracted player, Shreyas Iyer, also missed the Ranji Trophy due to reported lower back and groin issues.
Uncertain impact:
Kishan’s decision and the BCCI’s response pose questions about balancing player preference with board directives. While he emphasizes technical concerns, his T20 focus raises doubts about his red-ball commitment. The BCCI’s stance is clear, but its enforcement and player responses remain points of discussion.
