Ex-India batter heaps praise on Sarfaraz Khan’s ‘exceptional’ debut in IND vs ENG 3rd Test

Sarfaraz's hard work came to fruition when he smashed an impressive 62 of 66 balls while coming in at number six on his debut

Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar commended debutant Sarfaraz Khan for his aggressive approach during his innings on the opening day of the IND vs ENG 3rd Test of the five-match series at the Niranjan Shah Stadium.

Sarfaraz Khan showcased his talent by smashing an impressive 62 runs off 66 balls while batting at number six in his debut innings. His innings promised a significant contribution to the team’s total, displaying an array of stylish shots.

“Exceptional. Just the way he batted was like somebody from the past that’s come to the present with the way he played spin. It was a sight for the sore eyes, his judgment of length and the way he manuveared the good balls when most young batters would just block and build up dot balls. But he was taking the singles, superb against spin and has the back foot play as well,” Manjrekar was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

However, Sarfaraz’s debut innings was cut short due to a miscommunication with star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, resulting in a run-out at the non-striker’s end by Mark Wood. Despite this setback, Sarfaraz and Jadeja had built a promising partnership of 77 runs, showcasing Sarfaraz’s ability to adapt to the international level.

Commenting on Sarfaraz’s performance, Manjrekar praised his exceptional batting style, comparing it to that of a seasoned player from the past. He emphasized Sarfaraz’s skillful judgment of the length of the ball and his ability to manoeuvre good deliveries, which is uncommon among young batters. Manjrekar also highlighted Sarfaraz’s traditional approach to batting, noting his proficiency against spin bowling and his Mumbai roots.

“Even when he lofted the spin, it wasn’t pre-planned. He went towards the ball and at the last minute decided to hit the ball in the air so it was more like a chip shot. He looks gifted against spin and is very old-fashioned in the way he plays. Also, watching players like Sarfaraz, Prithvi Shaw, who are from Mumbai roots, gives the impression that they’ve played a million balls in their life,” the former right-hand batter added.

Sarfaraz’s rise to the international level has been eagerly anticipated by fans, given his consistent performances in domestic cricket, particularly in the Ranji Trophy. With impressive statistics in first-class cricket, including 14 centuries and 11 fifties, Sarfaraz has established himself as a prolific run-scorer with a bright future ahead.
