Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar backed Australian player Pat Cummins to captain Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2024. SRH paid an incredible Rs 20.50 crore at the IPL 2024 mini auction to purchase Cummins. Their other costly purchase from the auction was Travis Head, which cost Rs. 6.80 crore.
Gavaskar emphasized Cummins’s leadership traits, which he feels SRH lacked during the previous IPL season. The former captain of India made note of some dubious tactical choices, especially in the bowling department, which might have added to the team’s defeats. Gavaskar is “pretty certain” that Cummins will assume the captaincy role now that he is a member of the team, which will significantly improve the dynamic within the group.
Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar praised the decision as a “game-changer” for SRH, noting that Cummins’ versatility and leadership will be essential to the team’s success.
“I think Pat Cummins was a smart buy, maybe a little over-expensive. Smart buy because he will bring the leadership aspect to their team, which was lacking the last time around. Last time around, some of the bowling changes that we saw in crucial games were just head-scratching, and that cost them matches. So now with Pat Cummins coming in, I am pretty certain that he will be the captain of the team and that will make a huge difference,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
