Australia U19 captain Hugh Weibgen on Sunday was elated with his side’s effort as Australia pipped 5-time champion Indian to bring home the U19 World Cup trophy for the fourth time. Speaking after the match, Weibgen said he couldn’t be more prouder of his team. Weibgen also heaped praises on his bowling unit and teenager Harjas Singh who top-scored for the Australian side in the final.
Weibgen had a fantastic day individually too, scoring 48 runs of 68 balls. He was spot on with field placing and bowling changes too, as Australia came out as the better team in the day.
Speaking at the post match press conference, Weibgen said, “It’s unbelievable. I’m just so proud of the group of boys and the coaches. A lot of work has gone into this in the past few months and over the last year so couldn’t be prouder. Batting first, our plan was to get as much runs on the board as possible and back ourselves to defend it.”
Weibgen was appreciative of batter Harjas Singh who top scored for his side with a 55-run innings in the final. Harjas had an average World Cup campaign, but came good when it mattered the most.
“He is a quality player. Form is temporary but class is permanent. Full credit to the coaches for sticking with him. All the boys knew he would get the job done,” Weibgen said.
About their opponents in the final, Weibgen said, “India are a class side. They dominated the whole competition. They came out in the wrong side today. I’m sure they have a lot of quality players who would go a long way in their careers.”
Weibgen also praised his bowling unit. “As a unit they just work so well together. They know their roles and are happy to bowl from either ends,” he said.
