Australia on Sunday convincingly won the AUS vs WI 2nd T20I and sealed the series against West Indies. However, the match was marred by controversy when West Indies bowler Alzarri Joseph got to bat despite being run out.
The incident occurred in the 19th over of the West Indies innings. Alzarri Joseph, while batting, pushed a ball to covers and ran for a single. Spencer Johnson caught the fielder’s throw and dislodged the bails but none of the Australian players appealed.
However, when the replay of the incident came on big screen, it was seen that Joseph was short of the crease by quite some distance. The replay sparked celebrations from the Aussies. However, umpire Gerard Abood intervened and said Joseph would remain not out since none of the players from the fielding side appealed for the run out.
The Australian players were left visibly displeased at the decision, and one player was heard saying, “This is ridiculous.”
However, it is worth noting that the run out would not and did not impact the result of the game in any way as the West Indies were 190/9 at the time of the incident. They ultimately finished their innings 207/9, 34 short of the target.
