Indian Olympian banned for eight years by NADA, for second doping violation

Nirmala had already served a ban of four years, and had returned to competition in June 2023, where once again she tested positive.

India’s quarter-mile athlete Nirmala Sheoran has been handed an eight-year ban by the NADA, after the 28-year-old was found positive for a banned substance, in a test conducted last year.

The test was conducted at the National Inter-State Championships in June last year in Bhubaneswar, and Nirmala had returned after serving a four-year ban for an offence in 2018. Now, the athlete has been banned with effect from August 7, 2023.

It was found that she tested positive for “Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) and Testosterone (T)” according to the NADA website. She had participated at the 2016 Rio Olympics in 400m and women’s 4x400m relay.

“Yes, the athlete in question is Nirmala Sheoran. She (Nirmala on the NADA website) is the same athlete (as Nirmala Sheoran). It’s an out-of-competition test and her sample was taken in Jaipur,” an athletics team source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
