Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI senior national selection committee has given maiden Test call to pacer Akash Deep. In the squad announcement for last three India vs England Tests on Saturday, Board of Control for Cricket in India surprisingly opted to go with Akash Deep instead of Avesh Khan as a backup pacer.
The 27-year-old Akash Deep has received a thrilling call-up to the Indian Test squad for the final three matches against England, marking a significant moment in his cricketing journey. This selection comes after impressing the selectors with his performance against the England Lions in an unofficial game.
Akash Deep, hailing from Bihar, has overcome various challenges, including personal loss and limited sporting opportunities, to reach this stage. He honed his skills playing “khep cricket” (tennis ball tournaments) before transitioning to professional cricket.
Akash Deep over Avesh Khan as backup Test pacer
The selectors favoured Akash over Avesh Khan as the backup pacer, considering the latter’s need for match practice in the Ranji Trophy. Akash’s impressive pace and ability to bowl sharp in-dippers were factors in his selection.
With 103 wickets in 29 red-ball matches, Akash Deep brings promising talent and determination to the Indian team. His inclusion signals a commitment to nurturing young talent and providing them with crucial exposure at the highest level.
This unexpected yet well-deserved call-up is a testament to Akash’s dedication and perseverance. As he prepares to potentially make his Test debut, Indian cricket fans will be eager to see his skills showcased on the international stage.
