It’s been 25 years since Anil Kumble claimed his historic 10-wicket haul against Pakistan. India’s most prolific bowler became just the second man to take all ten wickets in an innings on February 7, 1999.
Not only did the leg-spinner reach the unimaginable milestone, but to do it against arch-rival Pakistan when the chips were against his team makes it even more sensational.
On his magical feat’s 25th anniversary, the man himself has acknowledged what that moment meant to him. Anil Kumble took to X (formerly Twitter) to go down memory lane and thank everyone for their support.
Down 0-1 in the series, the India cricket team was desperate to level the series in Delhi. The Mohammad Azharuddin-led side had a wobbly start, scoring just 252. However, the Indian spin duo of Anil Kumble (4) and Harbhajan Singh (3) ensured India remained ahead, restricting Pakistan to 172.
Sadagoppan Ramesh’s 96 helped India score 339 and set a huge 420 target for the visitors. Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi started strong in reply and stitched a 101-run opening stand. However, that’s when Anil Kumble dismissed Afridi and then Ijaz Ahmed on the very next ball.
But Kumble didn’t stop. Not one or two, Kumble ended up with all 10 Pakistan wickets. The leg-spinner joined Jim Laker as the second bowler to take 10 wickets in a single innings and is still one of three cricketers to have this magical feat to his name in test cricket’s 147-year history.
