Wrestling Nationals: Vinesh clinches gold upon return after 16 months, in non-olympic category

Vinesh Phogat was last seen in action at the World Championships 2022, where she won a bronze medal in the 53 kg category.

Vinesh Phogat is back! The Asian Games and Commonwealth gold medalist has made a successful comeback after being away from the sport for 16 months. Having last played in the World Championships in 2022, the 29-year-old showed no sign of rust as she clinched the gold in the Wrestling Nationals.

Vinesh Phogat beat Jyoti in the Final to win the gold medal in the 55 kg category. However, one concern regarding the wrestler on her return will be the weight category she was competing in.

The 29-year-old has found success in the past, competing in the 48 kg, 50 kg, and 53 kg categories. However, the seasoned wrestler decided to participate in the 55 kg category in the Wrestling Nationals. Talking about her decision to move to a higher weight category, she had earlier said:

“I am nervous because I will compete after long time. I will fight in 55kg because I am reducing weight after a long gap; I don’t want to cut too much weight when I’m coming back after surgery. I want to get some exposure and then shift to Olympic weight for bigger competitions like Asian Championships.
