NZ vs SA, 1st Test: Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra hit hundreds as hosts take honours on Day 1

Rachin Ravindra slammed his maiden Test ton, while former Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson hit his 30th Test century as New Zealand take Day 1.

Rachin Ravindra (118*) and Kane Williamson (112*) hit centuries as New Zealand finished the opening day with a commanding total of 258/2 on board in the first Test against South Africa at Bay Oval.

Opting to bowl, South Africa got off to a brilliant start, picking wickets of Devon Conway and Tom Blundell in quick succession.

However, veteran Williamson along with young sensation Rachin Ravindra weathered the storm and grinded hard to frustrate a rookie Proteas side. The pair went on to stitch an unbeaten 219-run stand for the third wicket to put hosts on top.

Ravindra slammed his maiden Test ton, while former Kiwi skipper Williamson hit his 30th Test century to keep the hosts in hunt for a big total in the first innings.

Williamson, who scored his 17th ton at home, also became the fourth-fastest player in the history of Test cricket to hit 30 centuries.

The 33-year-old reached the milestone in his 169th Test innings. Only Matthew Hayden, Steve Smith and Sachin Tendulkar have reached 30-ton in fewer innings than the Kiwi batter.

For South Africa debutant Tshepo Moreki and pacer Dane Paterson picked a wicket each.
