Antonio Habas, who took over the reigns of MBSG from Juan Ferrando, will look to make a statement win against East Bengal. The Mariners have not fared well against East Bengal especially this season, losing two of the three times they faced each other. Their only win against EB came in the Durand Cup final, a record the Mariners will not be too proud of.
On the injury front, MBSG will be without long-term absentee Ashique Kuruniyan, who has not featured for the team since the start of the season. Anwar Ali, who had suffered an injury and missed out on India’s AFC Asian Cup campaign, is back in training. Coach Antonio Habas also confirmed that right-back Ashish Rai is out of contention for the match after suffering a niggle.
East Bengal has been flying high after winning the recently-concluded Kalinga Super Cup. Carles Cuadrat’s men brought an end to East Bengal’s long-awaited trophy drought, and East Bengal have finally seemed to turn a corner after poor performances in the previous seasons. However, they need to up their performance in the ISL, with the Red and Gold Brigade at the eighth spot of the ISL table.
East Bengal will be without the services of Souvik Chakrabarty as he is suspended after getting four yellow cards in ISL. Apart from Souvik, experienced defender Harmanjot Khabra will also miss out the clash as he is still recovering from his injury. New signing Victor Vazquez is also unlikely to feature in the tie.
