Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has hailed West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph after West Indies scripted a historic win in the AUS vs WI 2nd Test. Joseph emerged as the hero for the Caribbean side in Gabba, breaking the backbone of Australia with a 7-fer in the fourth innings.
Shamar Joseph, in spite of having a broken toe, took the attack to the opposition after the West Indies gave Australia a target of 215 to chase at the Gabba. In spite of a valiant effort from opener Steve Smith (91 not out), Australia fell short by 8 runs in a thrilling encounter. Joseph cleaned up the lower order of Australia, taking the most of the wickets of Australia’s last seven batters in addition to dismissing Cameron Green and dangerous-looking Travis Head.
The victory produced spectacular scenes at the Gabba, with many former West Indies greats including Brian Lara and Carl Hooper being seen overwhelmed with emotions. Joseph was applauded for his valiant performance, and Steve Waugh joined the bandwagon too.
The former Australian captain took to social media to hail the Caribbean speedster. “There’s nothing like test cricket and this man may be the saviour in the purest form of the game. Cinderella stories are rare in sport but this was truly epic from a young man who has single handedly reignited the passion of cricket followers in the Caribbean and all over the world. Many congratulations,” Waugh wrote on Instagram.
