Recently retired former South Africa Test skipper Dean Elgar opened up about his first encounter with India’s Virat Kohli, way back in 2015, and it wasn’t the most pleasant interaction between the two. Elgar revealed that Kohli even spat at him during a heated argument.
“And I came into bat and, I was actually like holding my own against Ashwin and what’s his name Jeja, Jeja, Jeja (Ravindra Jadeja) and Kohli spat at me. I said to him if you do that, I’ll g * you with this bat,” Elgar said on Banter with The Boys podcast.
Asked if Kohli knew about the local slang, Elgar said, “Yes, he did because de Villiers was his teammate at RCB, so he understood. And I said if you do that, I’ll … on this field, I’ll absolutely knock you out. And then [he said] ‘Hey **** you, **** you’ (mimicking Kohli), barking up the wrong tree. Anyways, we are in India so you got to be a little bit cautious,” he added.
Meanwhile, Elgar played his final Test in the series against India, which ended in a 1-1 draw. After the match, the southpaw was presented with a signed jersey in Cape Town. In 86 Tests for the Proteas, Elgar scored 5,347 runs, including 14 tons and 23 half-centuries.
