West Indies legend likens Shamar Joseph to lethal icon, wants him to focus on Tests

The lethal Curtly Ambrose drew a parallel between Shamar Joseph and a legendary pacer after the former's heroics at the Gabba

Legendary West Indies bowler Curtly Ambrose compared young Shamar Joseph to the lethal Malcolm Marshall. The ex-pacer’s remarks come in the backdrop of Joseph’s match-winning and historic performance at the Gabba. West Indies clinched their first win in 30 years in Australia after leveling the AUS vs WI series 1-1.

Ex-Windies legend draws parallel between Shamar Joseph, Marshall

Speaking to the Daily Star, Ambrose noted that Shamar wasn’t as tall as the other legendary WI pacers. Pointing out that the youngster had raw pace and ability to bowl 14o kmph deliveries consistently, Ambrose likened the former to Malcolm Marshall. He further heaped praise on Joseph, backing him to be a huge find for the Windies.

“Shamar Joseph is not a 6 feet tall guy. He is a bit of skidder as he’s got raw pace and bowls at a pace of 140 plus consistently which is high pace. He is a skiddy customer more in the mould of Malcolm Marshall, who was quick and skiddy,” Ambrose said.

The legend also advised Shamar to focus more on Tests than T20s, adding that he could constantly improve himself in that way.

I would like to see Shamar Joseph play a lot of red-ball cricket. He has just started his career so he needs to learn and understand what it takes to become a world class fast bowler and then you can always branch out to ODIs or T20 cricket. But learn the art first, make sure he’s got a solid foundation and then he can branch out,” he added.
