It was absolute chaos on the field on this day in 1999 after the Sri Lanka side walked off the field after a decision involving legendary spinner Mutiah Muralitharan. The spinner was given a no-ball for reportedly throwing by umpire Ross Emerson in a World Series match against England at Adelaide.
When Sri Lanka walked off pitch in support of Muralitharan
The Sri Lanka side, then led by skipper Arjuna Ranatunga, walked off the field for a brief while, in protest against the umpire’s call. Although the game resumed later, there was reportedly a heated exchange between Ranatunga and his England counterpart Alec Stewart.
There was more chaos to follow in the game after this incident. Darren Gough allegedly feigned a head butt with Roshan Mahanama, this after the former was obstructed by the latter on the pitch.
However, luck was in favour of the Sri Lankans as they won the game by chasing down 303 runs with one wicket to spare. Fun fact, it was Muralitharan who hit the winning runs on that fateful day!
