With the India vs England Test series starting on January 25, Ravichandran Ashwin will be looking to topple yet another record. Having already set his eyes on the 500-wicket mark, the off-spinner will be looking to become the 9th bowler in the history of Test cricket to break the tally.
However, it won’t be the only record he will be going after in the 5-match IND vs ENG Test series. Having played 30 matches since the start of the World Test Championship in 2019, Ashwin stands third on the list of players with the most wickets in the WTC.
With the spinner set to play five Tests, he’ll look to go past Pat Cummins and Nathon Lyon on the list and occupy the top spot.
Most wickets in WTC: Can Ashwin hop over Lyon and Cummins?
Right now, Ravichandran Ashwin needs 22 wickets to go past both Cummins and Lyon. But, similar to Ashwin, the Aussies also are scheduled to play Test cricket. The Australian duo are going to three more Tests before the IPL 2024 season, just two less than what Ashwin is supposed to play.
Throough the two cycles, Ashwin averages 5 wicket per match while both Lyon and Cummins stand around the 4 wicket mark. One can predict that the Australian duo will cross the 180-wicket mark while Ashwin will be struck around 170 wickets and still third on the most wicket in WTC list.
