Former India cricketer and ex-India head coach Ravi Shastri and Indian batter Shubman Gill are set to be honoured in BCCI’s annual award ceremony on Tuesday. Ravi Shastri will receive the prestigious lifetime achievement award in the Indian cricket board (BCCI) Awards, set to be held in Hyderabad on Tuesday, January 23. Gill, on the other hand, will be presented with Cricketer of the Year award.
“He (Shastri) has been chosen for the honour while Gill will be awarded the cricketer of the year,” news agency PTI quoted a BCCI official as saying.
It will be the first edition of the BCCI awards since 2019 and it is expected that both India and England will attend the awards ahead of the 1st Test starting in Hyderabad on Thursday.
Gill came of age in 2023, becoming the fastest Indian batter to cross 2000-run mark in ODIs. He also scored five centuries in 2023, and became a key member of the Indian squad in all formats.
At 61 years of age, Shastri has played 80 Tests and 150 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for India. After retiring from playing, Shastri established himself in the cricket broadcasting world. Shastri has also twice served as the national team coach, first from 2014 to 2016, before rejoining the team as the head coach alongside skipper Virat Kohli ahead of the 2021 T20 World Cup.
