Not the first time… Rohit Sharma plays double Super Over for second time in T20s

One thing's for sure: if we witness another Super Over showdown in the World Cup, all eyes will be on Rohit Sharma, the man who has already danced with this cricketing tango twice.

The thrill of Super Overs was amplified to the max in Bengaluru on Wednesday, as India and Afghanistan battled it out in not one, but two Super Over! In a stunning turn of events, it was none other than captain Rohit Sharma who stood amidst the drama, repeating history with a crucial role in double Super Over.

This wasn’t Rohit’s first dance with double Super Overs. Back in 2020, during the Indian Premier League, he led Mumbai Indians against Kings XI Punjab in a match that etched itself in T20 folklore. Both teams tied both the regulation match and the first Super Over, sending the contest into an unprecedented second extra one-over showdown. While Mumbai ultimately lost that nail-biting game, it etched the experience of double Super Overs into Rohit’s cricketing memory.

In that IPL game, the first super over concluded with both teams scoring 5-5, and the second super over saw Punjab clinching victory with Chris Gayle’s six and Mayank Agarwal’s impactful boundaries off Trent Boult’s bowling.

Fast forward to Bengaluru, and Rohit found himself in a similar deja vu moment. After his blistering 121* in the main game, both India and Afghanistan ended the 20 overs tied on 212. In the first Super Over, Rohit Sharma again contributed valuable runs, guiding India to 16. But the Afghans matched them, leading to the historic moment – the first-ever double Super Over in international cricket.

This time, with only 11 runs on the board and two Afghan wickets down, India secured a thrilling victory. And amidst the celebrations, it was impossible not to notice the echoes of Mumbai’s 2020 experience in Rohit’s steady leadership and composure under pressure.

Rohit Sharma: Man of Double Super over

Rohit Sharma journey through two double Super Over, one triumph and one defeat, speaks volumes about his ability to perform under the most intense scrutiny. While the outcomes differed, his temperament and tactical nous remained constants, proving him to be a captain who thrives in the crucible of cricketing chaos.

As India gears up for the upcoming T20 World Cup, double Super Over experience of Rohit Sharma can be viewed as both a cautionary tale and a source of inspiration. It highlights the unpredictable nature of the format and the need for adaptability, while also showcasing Rohit’s ability to rise to the occasion and lead his team through extraordinary circumstances.

One thing’s for sure: if we witness another Super Over showdown in the World Cup, all eyes will be on Rohit Sharma, the man who has already danced with this cricketing tango twice and emerged victorious once. Will he add another chapter to his double Super Over saga on the world stage? Only time will tell.
