It was a different team, but the same result for the West Indies on Day 1 of the AUS vs WI 1st Test. After losing the toss and being in to bat first, the Kraigg Brathwaite-led side managed to score just 188 runs in the first inning.
Their openers, Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, were not good enough for Australian skipper Pat Cummins. His brilliance saw them both go back into the hut in the first hour of play. From there on, it was an uphill battle for the Windies.
Although youngster Kirk McKenzie stood up and played a gutsy knock, no one could assist him from the other end. When McKenzie fell after his maiden fifty to Josh Hazlewood, the West Indies were in a spot of bother.
After McKenzie’s wicket, the Windies were 107-5. After nine overs, the visitors were 133-9. But Kemar Roach and debutant Shamar Joseph were not done.
The debutant scored a quickfire 36, while Roach ended the inning unbeaten at 17. Their last wicket stand of 55 helped the West Indies get to 188 in the end.
