ICC ignored CSK CEO advice regarding India’s T20 WC match in Dallas

New York will host 8 games in the T20 World Cup including 1 against India, while Florida is set to stage 4 matches.

The buzz is building for the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA, but one city finds itself on the sidelines while another basks in the spotlight. While New York snagged three high-profile India matches, Dallas, despite its best efforts, has been left empty-handed, sparking questions about priorities and missed opportunities. Even CSK was batting for a match in the big city of Texas but ICC had different plans.

Major League Cricket (MLC) side Dallas Super Kings, an affiliate of the legendary Chennai Super Kings (CSK), saw a golden chance to promote cricket in the region by hosting an India game at their Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan lobbied hard. He told Cricbuzz, “If the ICC wants to promote cricket in the US, they should have allotted an India game to us.”

But the ICC’s calculus proved different. Time zone differences, a smaller venue capacity compared to New York’s 34,000-seater, and logistical challenges involving travel to the Caribbean, the other host nation, weighed in the Big Apple’s favor. “The India games are the most attended,” explained an organizer. “Why would we send them to the smallest venue in the USA?”

T20 World Cup matches in Dallas

While Dallas misses out on India’s star power, it does get the honor of kicking off the T20 World Cup with the USA-Canada clash and three more matches. New York, however, takes center stage with eight games, including one against India, while Florida gets a taste with four, one featuring the Men in Blue.

The decision leaves a bittersweet taste in Dallas’ mouth. Cricket’s growth in the USA could have received a significant boost with an India match, but the ICC’s focus on bigger venues, broadcaster demands, and operational efficiency trumped regional aspirations.

As the countdown to the World Cup begins, the question remains: will Dallas, despite its initial snub, emerge as a cricket hotbed in the USA? Or will New York reign supreme, drawing massive crowds and cementing its claim as the American epicenter of the sport? Only time will tell if the ICC gamble pays off, but one thing is certain – the T20 World Cup in the USA promises to be a fascinating blend of cricketing spectacle and strategic maneuvering, both on and off the field.
