Kim Hughes shares his bizzarre reaction on Steve Smith being promoted as opener

Former Australia captain Kim Hughes has expressed his dissent to the decision of promoting Steve Smith as Australia's Test opener following David Warner's retirement.

Former Australia captain Kim Hughes has criticized the team management’s decision to promote Steve Smith to the opening role following David Warner’s Test retirement. Warner’s final Test occurred earlier this month against Pakistan in Sydney, where Australia secured a 3-0 series sweep. Despite Cameron Bancroft’s strong case for replacing Warner, the management opted for Smith to open alongside Usman Khawaja in the upcoming two-match series against West Indies.

Expressing his disapproval, Hughes revealed his reaction to Smith’s elevation, stating, “I nearly vomited.” Hughes took aim at the selection committee for overlooking Bancroft, who, according to him, is in prime form. Hughes emphasized, “I’ve got no doubts in my mind that if Cameron Bancroft played for New South Wales, he’d be in the Test side.”

While acknowledging Smith’s superstar status, Hughes believes he has struggled recently and should stick to his usual batting order at No. 4. Hughes characterized Smith’s current form as that of a struggling opener, emphasizing the need for him to regain his form without distractions.

Highlighting the importance of rewarding performance in the Sheffield Shield, Australia’s premier red-ball tournament, Hughes stressed the need to recognize those playing well. He advocated for Bancroft’s inclusion, citing his impressive run-scoring in the Sheffield Shield last season, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer with 512 runs in six matches, averaging over 56.
