AO 2024: Daniil Medvedev takes cheeky dig at his team after win over Terence Atmane

Medvedev will play Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori in his round-of-64 match on January 18.

Despite a minor scare in his first-round match at the Australian Open 2024, Daniil Medvedev is through to the next round. Playing against qualifier Terence Atmane, the third seed lost the opening set despite being up a break.

However, from there on, it was the Daniil Medvedev show. He soon recalibrated to take the second set 6-2 and maintained his momentum in the next set as well. But it was not due to the Russians’ performance; Atmane himself succumbed due to exhaustion.

The Frenchman was playing his first-ever Grand Slam match and had himself worn out by the time the third set was coming to a close. After losing the third set 6-4, Atmane didn’t have much left in the tank and decided to retire after the first game of the fourth set.

After the match, Daniil Medvedev took a slight dig at his team for providing him with the wrong stats on the rather unknown Frenchmen.

“Tough match. He played pretty well. He’s just coming to tour, so I didn’t know much about him. Everyone told me he had a better forehand than backhand. But if you look at the stats, he missed like 3 backhands. Thanks, guys,” the former Australian Open finalist said.
