Steve Smith will be Australia’s designated Test opener now that David Warner has retired from the format. The announcement of the decision has bewildered many. But, now that Smith is set to get into his new in the upcoming AUS vs WI test series, the star batter has revealed the reason behind him moving up from the number 4 spot to 1.
Talking about his decision to move up the order during the Sydney Thunder vs Sydney Sixers match in the BBL, Steve Smith said:
“I’ve been sitting there waiting for a long time (when batting at four), and I’m not a good waiter. When you’re opening the batting, there’s none of that; you just get out there and get into your business.”
The star batter further added that having Marnus Labuschagne at number 3 and immensely talented Cameron Green at number four has allowed him to take the decision.
On being asked if he’s thinking about playing as a Test opener as a short-term plan instead of a long-term one, Smith said:
“Not from my point of view; I bat where I’m told.”
