Skippers have used proxy toss flickers and called both sides of the coin to improve their chances of winning the toss. However, what Frances Mackay did at the toss before the Canterbury Women vs Wellington Women match in the Women’s Super Smash 2024 takes it to another level.
Joining Wellington’s skipper Amelia Kerr in the middle for the toss, Mackay decided to throw the coin into the ground instead of flicking it up in the air. This left the match official, the referee, and Kerr shocked. Despite all of this, Mackay ended up losing the toss.
After losing and Wellington deciding to bat first, the official asked Mackay about her bizarre toss tactic. The official asked her, “That was an interesting toss of the coin. Where did it come from?”
To this, she replied, “I just enjoy doing things differently. We haven’t had the rub of the green the way we would have liked in the last couple of games. So, change things up and see if it changes things for the rest of the day for us.”
