David Warner expected to play T20I series against West Indies despite ILT20 commitments

Warner has retired from both Tests and ODIs formats, but his commitment to T20 cricket remains steadfast, with the T20 World Cup 2024 set to take place in June across the Caribbean and United States.

Australia’s selection chief George Bailey expects David Warner to be available for the three T20I series against West Indies starting February, even though it clashes with his captaincy duties in the ILT20 tournament for Dubai Capitals. Warner has retired from both Tests and ODIs formats, but his commitment to T20 cricket remains steadfast, with the T20 World Cup 2024 set to take place in June across the Caribbean and United States.

Warner, who is aiming to play ILT20 starting on January 19, faces a challenge as the tournament runs until February 17. It coincides with the T20I series against the West Indies from February 9 to 13. It was initially thought that Warner would miss the T20Is in order to stick to his ILT20 commitments, but Bailey confirmed that the Australian opener is expected to play in the series against the Windies, meaning he will be on the field.

“He’ll be part of those T20 matches at the back end of the summer and in New Zealand as well. I think that’s the same with all our Australian contracted players. If they’re going to be selected in a squad then they’re available. If they’re not then it depends on what sort of domestic cricket responsibilities they have,” Bailey said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

“So, I think [Warner] had flagged that as potentially one of the reasons why he has made the decision to retire from one-day cricket but we’re still really excited about what he can provide for that T20 team and hoping he can add one more major trophy to his cabinet,” he added.
