In the wake of severe criticism over the deplorable state of Moin-ul-Haque Stadium in Patna, which recently hosted a Ranji Trophy match against Mumbai, the Bihar government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, took a significant step on Monday by approving the creation of a dedicated department to oversee sports, athletes, and sports infrastructure in the state.
The newly-established Department of Sports will have a broad mandate, focusing on the development of sports in Bihar and implementing welfare initiatives for athletes. All sports infrastructure and sports universities will now fall under the purview of this specialized department, according to S Siddharth, the Additional Chief Secretary of the state cabinet department.
Highlighting the importance of this dedicated sports department, Siddharth stated as per India Today, “The state government will now promote sports and ensure superior participation of Biharis on national & international levels.”
The move comes in response to the recent controversy surrounding the Moin-ul-Haque Stadium, where the Ranji Trophy match took place. The stadium’s inadequate infrastructure, which lacked essential facilities such as a functioning scoreboard, drew widespread criticism.
BPA appreciates government’s decision after Ranji Trophy debacle
Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, who has a background in cricket, faced backlash for the poor condition of the stadium during the Ranji Trophy match. In response to the criticism, the Bihar government decided to address the issue by establishing a department solely dedicated to sports.
The Bihar Players Association (BPA) applauded the government’s decision, expressing satisfaction that sports would now receive focused attention. Mrityunjay Tiwari, the chief of BPA, appreciated the efforts of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav in prioritizing the welfare of sportspersons in the state.
“The duo of Nitish-Tejashwi is working hard for sportspersons in the state. They came up with MEDAL LAO, NAUKRI PAO earlier,” said Tiwari, reflecting the positive sentiment within the sports community in Bihar.
As the state takes this proactive step to enhance the state of sports and athletic facilities, it marks a promising beginning for a dedicated focus on sports development in Bihar. The establishment of the Department of Sports is expected to bring about positive changes and improvements in sports-related activities, ensuring a better future for athletes in the state.
