Is bringing Rohit Sharma as captain of India’s T20I team a step in right direction?

Rohit Sharma return as captain of India's T20I team ahead of T20 World Cup raises eyebrows. Is it the right decision?

Rohit Sharma’s return to the T20I squad has raised plenty of eyebrows. Is the India Cricket Team going on the right track? Is Rohit’s inclusion as captain a step backwards? The answers to these questions are not that simple. A lot of factors are at stake. Here we take a look at what happens if Rohit Sharma goes on to captain India in the T20 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma made a comeback into the T20I squad after a span of 14 months. He is set to captain the Men in Blue for a 3-match T20I series for the IND vs AFG series. This itself can be the writing on the wall that Rohit will lead the Indian’s contingent, 5 months from now, in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma last played for India in T20Is back in T20 World Cup semi finals, 14 months ago. After that the BCCI decided to field a new and young team in the shortest format of the game, keeping T20 World Cup in mind. As a result Hardik Pandya and his young boys played in the T20Is.

Now ahead of the IND vs AFG T20I series, India were in a precarious situation. Hardik Pandya is injured. Vice captain Suryakumar Yadav is also injured. So who is the next best person to lead the side? The BCCI selection committee decided to call upon Rohit Sharma who had an impressive ODI World Cup.

But is bringing Rohit a step backwards? Not necessarily. Both Rohit and Virat are towards the end of their careers. This could just be the perfect send off for the duo. While hopes were pinned on Rohit to win the ODI World Cup, India came close, before faltering in the finals to Australia.

Now with Hardik and SKY injured, Rohit is back to lead the side against the final 3 T20I matches against Afghanistan before the T20 World Cup. Rohit is in good form and a big IPL 2024 can do wonders for him. Furthermore, with Hardik being the new captain of Mumbai Indians, Rohit can focus on his batting only which will do wonders for him as just 5 months remain for the start of T20 World Cup.
