India and the Maldives traded barbs over a tweet by a Maldivian minister a few days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the archipelago nation. Since then, scores of Indians have announced cancellations of their Maldivian vacation plans on social media.
It all started with a tweet from a Maldives minister claiming that India was trying to target the country and that India was facing difficulties in competing with Maldives for beach tourism. Since the comments, hashtag ‘#boycottMaldives’ has been trending on Twitter in India.
Amidst the controversy, Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya took to X (previously Twitter) and heaped praised on Lakshadweep for it’s beauty. Pandya also expressed his disappointment about the harsh things being said about India.
“Extremely sad to see what’s being said about India. With its gorgeous marine life, beautiful beaches, Lakshadweep is the perfect get away spot and surely a must visit for me for my next holiday,” Hardik wrote.
