SA20 ambassador AB de Villiers blames T20 cricket, claims longer Test series needed to find best team

AB de Villiers blames T20 cricket for shorter IND vs SA Test series

Former South Africa Cricket Team captain and SA20 ambassador AB de Villiers has blamed T20 cricket for shorter India vs South Africa series. He went on to claim that owing to T20 cricket, there couldn’t be a third India vs South Africa 3rd Test match. De Villiers went on to claim that he is unhappy for this exact reason.

AB de Villiers wants longer series if the best team in the world is to be identified. The IND vs SA Test series ended in a draw. The Proteas won the Boxing Day Test while India bounced back to win the New Year’s Test to script a historic win in Cape Town.

“I am not happy that there is not a third Test. You have to blame the T20 cricket going around the world for that,” de Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

“I do not know whom to blame, but I sense something is wrong. If you want to see all the teams compete and see who is the best Test team in the world, something has to change,” de Villiers added.

De Villiers is of the opinion that the players are now keen to play shorter format of the game and opt out of Test cricket. The rise of T20 cricket has downsized red ball cricket.

The controversy arose when the Proteas decided to field a second string team for a 2-match Test series against New Zealand in February. South Africa Cricket received far and wide criticism for a fielding 7 uncapped players including their skipper Neil Brand for the test series against the Kiwis.

The players, the board and coaches will turn towards where there is more money. You cannot blame them for thinking about their future with their family,” he concluded.

CSA has citied the clash of schedule for SA20 which begins on 10th Jan and coincides with dates of the upcoming 2 Test matches.
