KL Rahul’s ‘defensive approach’ behind India’s collapse, feels Sanjay Manjrekar

India vs South Africa: Centurion from the first Test, KL Rahul struggled at Cape Town, and could only score eight from 33 balls.

The India vs South Africa Test at Cape Town not only witnessed a historic event on Wednesday, but also a humiliating one for the visiting team. From being 153/4 at one stage, Team India were bundled out for 153. They lost 6/0 at the score, to set many unwanted records.

The collapse of gigantic proportions happened after KL Rahul fell after his 33-ball vigil. And from there on it was game over, as Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Virat Kohli, followed soon after.

As far as former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar is concerned, Rahul might just be the one to have triggered a collapse. Not for getting dismissed, but for being too defensive. “See, you have to play shots. KL Rahul was too defensive. You won’t last long if you defend so much. In a way, Rahul’s approach played a small role in bringing SA back into the match,” Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo.

Right now, at 62/3, hosts South Africa still trail by 36 runs, as Manjrekar believes that if the target is around 125, India will win the watch. “I think the team can chase a target of more than 125 runs.”
