‘Test is pinnacle’: Michael Clarke dives into Test-T20 debate amid SA vs NZ series row

The former Australian skipper lashed out at the Proteas for naming 14 uncapped players for the SA vs NZ Test series

Amid the raging debate over Test cricket and T20s surrounding the SA vs NZ tour, former Australia skipper Michael Clarke entered the fray, calling the red-ball format the pinnacle. The Proteas triggered a storm after naming 14 uncapped players for the Test series to New Zealand, leaving out their star players who will feature in the SA20 league.

Clarke enters Test-T20 debate over SA vs NZ series row

Clarke joins many former cricketers who have vehemently opposed CSA’s decision to give preference to the domestic league over Test cricket. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Pug asserted that the red-ball format was the ultimate and that while SA had their reason, no domestic league could come close to Tests.

Playing for your country is the most important thing. It is sad to see this is the case. Imagine if Australia did this, or India did it. It’s already hard enough for fans to see international teams not at full strength playing a handful of ODIs in a series or T20Is. Fans want to see the best players play. But if the best players aren’t picked for Tests, then it is an uphill battle,” Clarke said.

South Africa Test squad: Neil Brand (captain), David Bedingham, Ruan de Swardt, Clyde Fortuin, Zubayr Hamza, Tshepo Moreki, Mihlali Mpongwana, Duanne Olivier, Dane Paterson, Keegan Petersen, Dane Piedt, Raynard van Tonder, Shaun von Berg, and Khaya Zondo.
