Deepti Sharma grabs fifer, achieves best figures by an Indian woman against Aussies in ODIs

The off-spinner finished her bowling spell with figures of 10-0-38-5, going into the history books to have the best ODI figures by an Indian woman against Australia.

Indian allrounder Deepti Sharma on Saturday scripted history by taking a fifer against Australia in the IND W vs AUS W 2nd ODI at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The off-spinner finished her bowling spell with figures of 10-0-38-5, going into the history books to have the best ODI figures by an Indian woman against Australia.

Deepti had a tough task to perform when she came to bowl. Phoebe Litchfield and Ellyse Perry were going strong once again after captain Alyssa Healy departed early. Deepti provided the much needed breakthrough for India, getting rid of Perry with a slightly faster delivery. As Perry looked to pull the ball over mid-wicket, Shreyanka Patil held on to a smart catch in the second attempt.

Beth Mooney became Deepti’s next target. The Aussie batter completely missed a tossed up delivery which she tried to sweep. The ball wrapped on the pads and umpire’s finger went up. Although the decision was reviewed, DRS upheld the umpire’s decision.

Tahila Mcgrath was looking settled in the middle when Deepti Sharma tossed up a ball that spun sharply to beat Mcgrath and knock off the stumps. Annabel Sutherland departed soon after, becoming Deepti’s 4th wicket when she played a pitched up ball straight into Deepti’s hands. Deepti did well to hold on to the catch.

Georgia Wareham provided Deepti with her fifth wicket of the match. Wareham danced down the middle to heave a slow delivery out of the ground. However, Sutherland could not cleanly connect with the ball. Smriti Mandhana, who stood at short mid wicket, ran backwards and took a smart catch to help Deepti become the Indian bowler with best figures against Australia Women in ODI.
